<sub>The cold river waters pushed gently against Indigo’s feet from where he sat along the banks. Warm sunlight gently cascaded down from the spaces in the branches of elder trees around him, the leaves rustling in the faint breeze. It carried the scent of the forest with it; the smell of the grass and moss wet with dew, the near-mintiness of the loosestrife swaying in the nearby field. There was little sound except for the babbling water before her and the creaking of the old trees around him, except…

There was suddenly a loud, sharp call from above.

Looking up, Indigo saw that, where the branches had been bare except for their leaves before, there were now hundreds of black birds. So many pairs of jet-black eyes stared down at Indigo calmly, and not a single bird moved, dead still even despite the moving branches that were slowing to a halt. There were so many that they seemed to close the gaps between the branches and block the sunlight itself, casting shadows down that covered Indigo and the water before him.

But… Indigo wasn’t afraid. Looking into the eyes of the unmoving beasts felt like looking into the eyes of old friends. Leaning forward from where he leaned back, he lifted his hands to the sky, palms-up, in a welcoming gesture – an invitation – to each of the black beasts above him. Fingers outstretched, he let out a soft hum that seemed to echo in the space now enclosed by corvids.

The crows descended down on Indigo like a massive black cloud, the near-silence pierced by the sound of hundreds of pairs of dark wings beating in the air. The birds swarmed, their bodies bouncing into each other as they tried to get to Indigo; some even looked like they were slapping the fellow members of their murder to get to him.

A single crow stood out amongst the bunch. Smaller than the rest and thin, it was distinct in the way that its chest was entirely white, as if it had been pelted with snow that had never melted in the warm rays of summer. Its dark eyes met Indigo’s as it dropped down in front of his face, and as the birds began to land on Indigo’s body, the white-chested flyer dipped its head—

“Indigo,” a lulling voice murmured. “Wake up, sweetheart.”</sub>
